Overview:
This project screens bulk materials for two-dimensional (2D) magnetic compounds using computational methods. The goal is to identify exfoliate materials with potential magnetic applications, focusing on their magnetic properties such as exchange, anisotropy, and Curie temperature.
Data Sources:
Data was sourced from the Inorganic Crystal Structure and Crystallography Open Database. 4264 materials were initially considered based on their structure and magnetic potential.
Tools and Technologies Used:
We used a geometric descriptor to filter exfoliate materials and density functional theory (DFT) to compute magnetic properties, including exchange interactions, anisotropy, and Curie temperatures. Classical Monte Carlo simulations were employed to model magnetic behavior.
Key Findings:
The screening identified 85 ferromagnetic and 61 antiferromagnetic 2D materials. Of these, 10 new ferromagnets and 18 antiferromagnetic insulators with strong magnetic properties were discovered. The Curie temperature calculations matched well with experimental values for known materials.
